G’day!!

Okay, story time… I met Chris (Stubbsy) in 2004 while I was studying abroad in Australia.  I really couldn’t tell you exactly when we met or even how we became such good friends. But I can tell you that all of my best memories, all of the ones that bring a smile to my face (most of which involved some sort of sing-a-long, smileys pizza, PFAs (Pleasant Friday Afternoons) and a healthy dose of UDLs), included the same two people:  Bron & Stubbsy.  Affectionately dubbed our “token Aussies.”  And I’m sure Bron will get her own blog post at some point (love you, Bronny!).

I remember saying goodbye to these two at the Melbourne airport.  If you’ve never been to the Melbourne Airport there are these huge silver doors that shut behind you as you enter the security check point in the international terminal… it’s all very dramatic.  I remember walking through those doors, trying to muffle sobs in my hoody.  I turned around to take one last poetic look at my friends before the door shut… as I caught my last glimpse of my token Aussies, who were crying just about as hard as I was, I realized that somehow in all the craziness that was our semester abroad, I had made two friends for life (awwww….).

So, flash forward seven years from that point.  Lots has happened since then, but I’d say Stubbs and I have done a pretty good job at keeping in touch I’d say (thanks mostly to Facebook).  There have been a handful of phone calls at random hours of the night (never could get that time difference correct), many, many emails, and even a few visits!  We’ve both gotten married, bought houses and started businesses.  It all sounds so grown up compared to what we were like when I was in Australia!  Anyhow, I hadn’t met Stubbsy’s wife, Verity (Vez), yet but I had heard all about her and her budding photography business (see: Ginger & Mint).  Turns out as fate would have it, we started our businesses around the same time.  So, this summer they set out on their trip of a lifetime and luckily for me there was a stop in NYC!  I have to admit, I was a little nervous to see Stubbsy and to meet Vez.  I mean, I hadn’t seen Stubbsy in 5 years! What if we had nothing in common anymore?  Of course, I was wrong!  I felt like we picked up right where we left off!  And as for Vez, well I felt like I had known her my whole life!!

So, now onto the photos… it’s always nerve wracking to shoot for other photographers but I was so honored when they asked me to snap a few shots for them in NYC’s ultra fashionable meat packing district.  It was so cool to see these two interact in front of the camera.  I can see why they work so well together, and it was such an honor to have shot for them!  Enough chatter, check ‘em out!

LOVE this next one…

have I killed this whole “tire depth of field” thing yet?   maybe, but i still like it!

outtake…

And one extra I shot in central park…. right before I tripped up a set of stairs and fell on my a$$!  Literally.  Embarrassing.  Very, very embarrassing!

Stubbs & Vez – here’s to NOT going another 5 years before we see each other again (ya bloddy wankas!) :) Love you Aussies!

Happy Thursday!

I compare Saturdays (and sometimes Fridays and Sundays) to game day in college.  Same adrenaline.  Same excitement.  No two games are ever the same, but you go through your same routine before hand.  Without fail.  Every time.  It’s like a meditation.  Your way of knowing that no matter what happens, you were prepared.  You were at your very best.  For us, Saturday’s are typically an early alarm, a pot of coffee, and a quick shower.  Equipment is packed (most likely the night before), checked, then double checked. Big breakfast eaten, one more cup of coffee and out the door.  And typically 15 minutes early.  Just like in college, if you’re not 15 minutes early, you’re late.  And just like in college, we lived for this.  But.  When you get one to yourself.  One day off.  One day to recharge.  No weddings.  No shoots. No alarm clock.  Nowhere to be by a certain time.  No to do’s (okay, well that’s a lie, there are always to do’s).  All of a sudden, this one Saturday can look a lot different.  Even though we couldn’t shake our “up early” routine (or evidently the “camera in hand” routine either), for Joe and I this Saturday morning looked as simple as this:  Time to bake fresh muffins for breakfast!

What’s your Saturday morning look like!?

Happy Weekend everyone!  Stay safe from Irene!

Bye-Bye Beard.

Joe’s been “off” for the past two weeks.  I would call it vacation, except that the definition of vacation is NOT working everyday, which is what we both did.  But, one thing it was a vacation from was shaving!  Which I love!  Bearded Joe just…
